Harvest Moon 64 is a game for N64 I have wanted for a long time. Ever since I heard about it, years ago maybe, I have wanted to play it. I had never tried it before, but I wanted it. Less then a year ago, I went into a GameStop and found a used one for 30 dollars(which is sort of a rip) but I didn't care, so I bought it. As soon as I got home that night....I couldn't play it lol it was too late. So the next day after school, I played it for a while. It seemed really cool, and had an awesome concept, plant crops, raise chickens, and I liked it. But after a while I sorta got bored with it. I think I was about 3 days into summer, and I just, didn't find it interesting anymore. Well, about 3 days ago, when Easter break started, I tried playing it again, and I have played it all through Easter break. Right now I am in spring again, so I am on my second year. I don't know why I stopped playing, because the game gets cooler, the longer you play it lol. It is sort of like AC, you have your own house, and you can upgrade it, you buy and sell stuff at shops, there are events every season. But anyways...
Graphics: If you know me, I don't care about graphics on a game, as long as it is fun. But for those of you who are obsessed with graphics, based on the time the game was made, the graphics are pretty cool. They have a 3D look to them, but sort of not. Hard to explain, as I don't pay much attention to this. 9/10
Music/Sound: Each season of the game, the music is different. In spring it's calm and happy. Summer, it's happy, but energenic. Fall it is sort of calm but it has a sad mood to it, and then in Winter, it's like somebody died, lol. So the music helps with the feeling of each season. Whenever there is some sort of event the music is pretty cool too. The sounds are great. You hear birds chirping, cats meowing, dogs barking. The sound is realistic for everything, the tools you use, the ocean, the crickets at night. One weird thing is, it's a little off. For instance, I was using an axe one day to cut up a stump, and I hit the stump, and a second later you hear a thump lol. 9/10
Controls: The controls aren't rocket science for this game. Each button does it's own thing. One for picking up stuff and talking, one for using tools, etc. If you don't understand the controls of this game, you don't deserve to play any game at all lol. 10/10
Gameplay and Fun: The story in the beggining is a little slow, but it tells you what you need to know. Your grandfather died, you are taking over the farm, eveRyone in town is affected by it. The events that occur, some are a little boring, like the spirit festival at the end of the year, you listen to some people play their flutes, and then eveRyone applaudes and you leave. Others like horse races, the egg festival, etc. are active, like you participate in them, and you can win. Overall, I'd say there are only 2 problems in this game. The first and worst, is time. Each day you wake up at like, 6 AM and it gets dark at 6 PM. Unlike our AC, the time goes by, in about 10 minutes, which doesn't leave you with a lot of time to goof off. If you have plants and livestock, you have to water and feed them, which takes a good 2 minutes. Then your left with 8 minutes to go fish, buy things, get food for livestock if you need it, or help build something. If there is an event, you better hope you don't have much to do, because you might not make it there in time, and if you want to buy something from a store, you better do that first, cause everything closes at 6 PM, except for the bar. Hopefully the HM they are making for Gamecube will have real life time, that would totally rock. The second thing that is bad about this game, is you basically have to figure out everything on your own, like what people's names are and how to get recipies (which don't do anything) unless you have a guide or something. In fact, the only way to figure out some people's names are to look in a guide, cause most of them don't tell you. Aside from these two EVIL features, the game is pretty cool. I like it a lot, and if you like AC, you probably will too. 9/10
Overall Rating: 9/10 If your not sure about if you want this game or not, rent it, and if you do want to buy it, if you go to GameStop, don't buy the used game for 30 dollars, cause thats a rip off lol. Right now, I'd say a good price for a used Harvest Moon 64 is probably 10, and then a un-used for 20. This game rocks!
